Calumet Collaborative's Earth Day Celebration 2020
On April 22, 2020, the Calumet Collaborative celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day! This celebration included a full day of virtual programming including mini-webinars and discussions, a short video and movie with review discussion, and family activity ideas. During the webinars, Mark Bouman, from the Field Museum’s Keller Science Action Center, shared significant events that happened in the Calumet region in the 1970’s and some of the environmental changes that have taken place in the last 50 years. George Roadcap, an Illinois State Water Survey hydrogeologist that has studied water in the region for years, discussed efforts to clean-up contaminated water bodies in the Calumet region and discussed the region’s water quality. And Paul Fitzgerald, Executive Director of Friends of Big Marsh, talked about the recreational activities in the Calumet region including Big Marsh Park, the new Ford Environmental Center, and more.
